Jong-Il Kim
Early Life and Political Beginnings
Jong-Il Kim was born on February 16, 1941, in Vyatskoye, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. He was the son of Kim Il-sung, the founder and first leader of North Korea. Jong-Il Kim entered politics at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea.
Rise to Power
Kim's ascent to power began in the 1970s when he was appointed to key positions within the North Korean government. By the 1980s, he was being groomed as his father's successor.
Leadership of North Korea
After the death of Kim Il-sung in 1994, Jong-Il Kim assumed leadership of North Korea. His rule was characterized by authoritarianism, human rights abuses, and the pursuit of nuclear weapons.
