Daniel von Bargen
Early Life and Education
Born on June 5, 1950, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Juanita J. (née Bustle) and Donald L. von Bargen, Daniel was of German and English descent. He spent most of his childhood in Cincinnati before moving with his family to Southern California. A graduate from Purdue University, von Bargen majored in drama, setting the stage for his future career in acting.
Television and Film Career
Von Bargen made his television debut in 1974 in 'Feasting with Panthers' on PBS's 'Great Performances'. He is perhaps best known for his roles as Mr. Kruger on 'Seinfeld' and Commandant Edwin Spangler on 'Malcolm in the Middle'. His filmography includes significant roles in 'The Silence of the Lambs', 'Basic Instinct', 'Broken Arrow', and 'Philadelphia', among others. He portrayed a variety of characters, from authority figures to villains, showcasing his broad acting range.
Stage Contributions
Aside from his screen roles, von Bargen had a notable stage career, including a long residency with Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, Rhode Island. He made his Broadway debut in 'Mastergate', a role for which he won a Theatre World Award for Outstanding New Performer in 1990.
