Porsche 996

The Porsche 996 is the Porsche 911 model introduced in 1997. It features the most significant changes to the car since its introduction in 1963. Chief amongst these is the fully water-cooled engine that is necessitated by more stringent noise regulations and higher customer expectations for refinement. Other significant changes include a sleeker body with a more steeply raked windshield and a re-designed interior. Because of these differences to the previous 911 models, many consider the 996 to be an altogether different car rather than a development of the original. The first 996s were available as a coupe (called Carrera) or cabriolet and had a 3.4 litre naturally aspirated engine producing 300bhp with either rear or four-wheel-drive. In 2000, a new 911 Turbo with four-wheel-drive and a 3.6 litre 420bhp engine was introduced. In 2002, the standard models had a minor re-styling and engine capacity was increased to 3.6 litres across the range. This larger engine produces 320bhp. Also in 2002, production of the Targa version with a sliding glass roof started. There are also two lightweight GT versions with more powerful engines than the standard cars and which are only available with rear wheel drive and manual transmissions. These cars, labelled GT2 and GT3 and based on the Turbo and the naturally aspirated Carrera respectively.
